Meet this 29-year-old artist and educator who makes Canvas the accent of her full fit whether she’s inside the classroom or outside making art as Paper Pirate!
Find out how Mary takes her love for Canvas on a whole new level, whatever role she may need to take on.
Name: Mary Cruz
Age: 29 years old
Profession: Artist & Educator
Describe a day in your life. I have this line whenever I’m asked how my day goes I say; “teacher by day, artist by night, and somewhere in between there’s always time to be heavily-caffeinated-me” and I think that’s the most accurate way to say it!
I wake up in the morning and get up, make my morning coffee, cook my meals for the day, pack up my things, ready myself as Ms. Mary and drive off. And when I’m not teaching in a classroom, I spend the rest of my day as Paper Pirate; painting commissions, making art, and sharing them.
And at the end of the day I get the chance to be just me. I either fill my time playing video games (I am obsessed with The Legend of Zelda), I book hop a lot as I enjoy reading books, or I spend it with friends and loved ones.
What's your personal mantra?
“Love what you do and it will love you in return”
Share a productivity hack/secret:
“If you want to learn something wholeheartedly, teach it.”
Write what you want to do the next day before heading to bed, and read it again when you wake up
Describe your personal style:
Give me a black shirt, pants, and we’re good to go! I like keeping it casual and plain, easy to pair with whatever and whoever I gotta be for the day.
Name an artist/band that you would like to soundtrack your life:
Honestly I love so many genres it ranges from My Chemical Romance, then we jump to Lizzo, then we go to The 1975; I’m all over the place. But if I were to pick one for the soundtrack of my life I would have to say Vanessa Carlton!
What's your favourite Canvas Club item?
I love bringing around my Mailman Sling! For commuting, traveling, meet-ups, and errands, it’s perfect for everything!
Why do you like using Canvas Club?
The simple and functional design is perfect for the many responsibilities I have, the places I need to be, and the things I need to bring with me. I love that its daily purpose is to cater to my own, and it has always been an easy match with the role I need to be.

Where do you usually take your Canvas Club bag?
My students can vouch for me when I say that I always have my Canvas Club bag next to me whenever I am giving a lecture. It fits all the books, the notebooks, even my gadgets and my tools when I gotta demonstrate some sort of artistic technique for them. It is, as a loving joke in my classroom, the official teacher-assistant.

How do you make your Canvas yours?
I leave it as is but since I wear plain clothes often, I usually make the Canvas Club bag the accent to my overall look. If I’m wearing dark, it’s the accent; if I’m wearing light colors, it is the bold part of the entire ensemble. It never looks out of place.
